Death Before Daylight by Shannon A. Thompson

Death Before Daylight (The Timely Death Trilogy Book Three) by Shannon A. Thompson

DBD_coverBook Description: Two eternities. One ending.
“Harmony would only come with destruction.”
The moment Eric and Jessica are reunited, they are torn apart. After the appearance of a new breed of shades and lights, the powers shift for the worse, and all three descendants find themselves face-to-face in the Light realm. When Darthon is in control, the last thing everyone expects is to finally hear the truth.
While Jessica learns the reason of her creation, Darthon’s identity is exposed to Eric—and only Eric—and Eric can no longer defend himself. With the eternities of the Light and the Dark resting on Jessica’s shoulders, she must choose who she will be—a light or a shade.
In the end, someone must die, and the end is near.

*This book was sent to us in exchange for a fair and honest review.*

My Review: I love this series. I thought I should be upfront about that. The thing that I liked most about this book was the way it went off the rails. There is a point towards the beginning that this feeling of impending dread starts to curl around the characters and you know that everything is not going to be okay.  And it isn’t.

My favorite book by this author is still Take Me Tomorrow but Death Before Daylight is now a very close second. Shannon A. Thompson has a way of changing up the young adult formula that keeps one on their toes.

I believe this is the end of this series but it could go on. The last few chapters of the book are like that open ending of your favorite television series that has come to an end. You can see all of the possibilities and your hopeful that they will carry on. So I’m going to say that this was a fantastic third book and if it is the end, forever, I’ll be content. It ties up loose ends and yet leaves you wanting more. Perhaps Shannon A. Thompson will gift us with a short story of Eric and Jonathon’s road trip or maybe the wedding? Here’s me with my fingers crossed.

I really liked how Jessica evolved through this series. Talk about your character arcs. She begins her journey clueless. She doesn’t know anything; she doesn’t even know enough to be fearful. By the end of Death Before Daylight she knows things that even the elders don’t know. She becomes an adult who puts the needs of others above her and Eric’s. It’s a simple thing that has a powerful impact. It’s impressive. It also gives the reader a sense of having history with the character. We feel like we’ve been with the character longer than we have.

Eric evolves too. He learns to share his burden. Even from book one we understand that Eric has always been groomed for his position as savior protector of the shades. What’s at stake hangs like a weight around his neck. It was nice to see Jessica help with that. And as long as we’re talking about characters there is the return of two character that are both close to Eric and they help Jessica out in an interesting way.

For me at least this series has been about balance. The Light needs the Dark as much as the Dark needs the Light. It’s true in the books and in life. This series demonstrates that people need balance. They also need hope and the end of this book definitely gives the characters hope for the future. One with out war. We get to see a glimpse of what it takes to pick up the pieces from war. The survivors move forward because that’s the only thing that can be done. It’s a satisfying end to a beautiful trilogy.

The End

johnny_automatic_booksIt has been a fantastic two years here at The Modest Verge Book Blog but it’s time for us to say goodbye. We’ve learned a lot and met so many wonderful people. This has truly been a terrific experience.

Jessica and I have decided to take on other projects but we will never forget all of the great authors who sent us books to review and those who gave their time by writing their Book Story. We are very grateful and will never forget your kindness.

We still have a book or two left to review. I didn’t want to go out with a goodbye. I want to go out with book reviews. We plan to post them closer to their release date in all the usual places. In fact I’ll be posting Death Before Daylight next Monday. It’s part of the Timely Death trilogy by Shannon A. Thompson. It’s fitting that Death Before Daylight is the last book I review here. Minutes Before Sunset, the first book in the trilogy was the first book an author ever sent to me. Thank you Shannon A. Thompson.

I would also like to thank Jessica for going on this book excursion with me. I probably didn’t say thank you enough. I feel like we visited every corner of the world. (Jessica, remember the zombies in the desert? Oh, and that girl we saw who stole books?) Jessica is going to concentrate on her amazing blog Jessica’s Family Genealogy. If you have genealogy questions you should contact her. It’s her passion and she’s very knowledgeable.

Goodbye

If you haven’t already, please check out all of the authors that participated in our Book Stories Series. You can find them all in the Book Stories drop down menu above. They all had very moving stories to tell. We’re very proud that we were able to bring them to you.

Finally, Jessica and I would like to thank our readers. So many of you were here from the beginning and this wouldn’t have been as much fun without you.

Thank you to everyone for the book memories,

My Book Story: A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah

Shannon A. Thompson

Picking one story that has affected my life is nearly impossible. Although I love the idea of sharing impactful stories, I found myself so riddled with options that I was afraid to pick one in fear that it wouldn’t be the “right” one to share. That being said, I could talk about this subject forever, but I knew I had to talk about one story, and I wanted to pick one story that I feel – personally – doesn’t get enough attention from various communities of readers despite the wide amount of attention it has received from nonfiction readers.

43015I found A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah in a Hastings in Lawrence, KS. I thought I was having a rough day, so I skipped class to disappear into the bookshelves of a store off-campus. I said “I thought I was having a rough day” because A Long Way Gone is a memoir about a child solider in Africa, and the issues explored in Ishmael’s story shattered any notion that my problems mattered at all. For instance, right when I was following the rhythm of the horrors scattered throughout this story, Ishmael would remind me of his age, by stating, “That was my fifteenth birthday”, and all of my “rhythm” was disrupted. All my worries were disrupted, and I was filled with so many emotions about Ishmael’s life and all the lives like his.

As a writer of YA fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, I often find myself reading all kinds of fiction and nonfiction, but memoirs often go untouched by the masses, and memoirs have so much to teach us about the world and about the people who affect this world. Ishmael Beah stayed with me because he went beyond this world with one of my favorite literary quotes to this day: “We must strive to be like the moon.”

But – perhaps – the most important quote that summed up my emotions for this striking and memorable life story was this: “…children have the resilience to outlive their sufferings, if given a chance.”

Best Of 2014

Bestof2014

Another year is gone. That fact would be really sad if the best of list wasn’t my favorite of the year. This year we read some amazing books. My year appears to be made up of books featuring unique female characters. Even if they were not the main characters they were still amazing. Looking back on this year I also find that I love airships. There are more airships to come next year. I know this for a fact because I just bought a slue of them. Jessica’s year was made up of love triangles and sleeping beauties. Fun stuff.

I like knowing where I’ve been so that I know where I’m going. My resolution for next year is to read more steampunk and possibly more graphic novels. So let’s end 2014 with a love fest of the best books we read this year and then we’ll tell you about our awards for New Year’s day. Be sure not to miss our Friday post about the books we bought this month and will be reading next year.

Our requirements for this list were:

1) We had to have read the book in 2014

2) It had to be a full length novel

Without further ado here is our list of the best books that we read in 2014. These are in no special order.

TMT_BookBook Description:  Two years after the massacre, the State enforces stricter rules and harsher punishments on anyone rumored to support tomo – the clairvoyant drug that caused a regional uprising. But sixteen-year-old Sophia Gray has other problems. Between her father’s illegal forgery and her friend’s troubling history, the last thing Sophia needs is an unexpected encounter with a boy. He’s wild, determined, and one step ahead of her. But when his involvement with tomo threatens her friends and family, Sophia has to make a decision: fight for a future she cannot see or sacrifice her loved ones to the world of tomorrow.

* I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review*

My Review:  The book description sounds dire.  This book is far darker than the Timely Death series.  While the Timely Death series follows Eric and Jessica’s struggle with the righteous Light it is confined to their struggle.  The war that Eric and Jessica are fighting is not known to the everyday humans.  There isn’t a constant tension that the entire world would be affected.  This book has a wider scope.

In the opening pages we find that the United States is a different place then what we know.  There is a curfew that the main character of this story skirts like a professional.   Right from the beginning we know that something terrible has happened and changed everything forever.

We are immediately introduced to a drug that is a huge problem for a lot of people for a number of reasons.  Tomo allows the user to see the future.  It’s an interesting concept.  Who wouldn’t want to see the future right?  When Sophia meets Noah for the second time he is clearly under the influence of tomo.  Under the influence and totally alert as if it’s a normal thing for someone to know what is going to happen before it happens.

The characters in this novel are just as complex, and just as complicated as the Timely Death series so if you enjoyed those characters you will love these.  These are not just normal teenagers thrust into the unknown.  These teenagers know that life can be upset in a single heartbeat.  They know that lives can be irrevocably changed by the decisions or mistakes of a single person.

This book is an adventure and I loved every single minute of it.  I enjoyed getting to know Noah and Sophia.  Everything is on the line in the war they are fighting and the author makes us feel it.  If you like books such as Divergent and Under the Never Sky then you will love Take Me Tororrow.  It’s a big story with many layers and I’m excited for the next installment.  It’s clear that Shannon A. Thompson is growing as an artist and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

SBS*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

I was so sad when I reached the end of this book.  It wasn’t just that I was sad that the story was over but that the book wouldn’t be out for a couple of weeks.  That day however has come.  It’s here.  Everyone can buy Seconds Before Sunrise and then we can all talk about it.

Book Summary:

Two nightmares. One memory.

“Chaos within destiny. It was the definition of our love.”

Eric has weeks before his final battle when he’s in an accident. Forced to face his human side, he knows he can’t survive if he fights alone. But he doesn’t want to surrender, even if he becomes the sacrifice for war.

Jessica’s memory isn’t the only thing she’s lost. Her desire to find her parents is gone and so is her confidence. But when fate leaves nightmares behind, she decides to find the boy she sees in them, even if it risks her sanity.

My Review:

I was a little reluctant to start this book because I knew what was coming.  I knew it was going to be ugly.  Poor Eric.  It wasn’t enough that he was born the champion of the dark foretold in a prophecy.  Oh no.  He has to deal with the fall out from book one.  (If you haven’t read Minutes Before Sunset then you should go and do that now.  You’re missing out.)  I think he has every right to be as angry and despondent as he is at the beginning of this book.  His already messed up life is even more messed up.

I’m glad that I sucked up my reluctance.  I really enjoyed the book.  Eric is a different character by the end of this one.  Now he knows what he’s fighting for and what he’s willing to risk in the process.  In contrast Jessica gets back to who she was in the first book.  She fearless in book one and watching her be anything less in this one was painful.  They really were painful  to read but I think they should be.  What happened to Jessica during book one spins out of Eric’s control.  She loses an important part of herself and it’s sad to watch her not know why she’s struggling.  We have to witness the fall out from that as unpleasant as it is.  Have I said poor Eric yet?  It’s important because it makes what happens later all the more remarkable.

I’m not sure I’ve read anything before where the final battle isn’t so final.  It goes so off the rails that I wasn’t sure what would happen next.  It was exciting.  Both books full of moments like that.  I found myself having a NO moment, a WHAT moment, several THIS CAN’T BE HAPPENING moments, and an AWWWWW THAT’S SO SWEET moment.  One thing is for sure;  the next book in this series is going to be huge!  I loved every single second.

Author Interview with Shannon A Thompson

Blackout_AuthorIntWe have a great interview with author Shannon A Thompson to share with you.  We just reviewed Minutes Before Sunset and her new novel Seconds Before Sunrise will be out on March 27th.  We are really excited to find out what happens.  Read our review to find out why.  It’s a great book.  Our first questions are silly ones but she gave us great answers to all of our questions.  She has an amazing website with tons of information.  It doesn’t matter if you’re an aspiring writer or an avid reader who wants to know how authors do what they do, her website has great information.  If you have fun questions that you would like to see us add to our list of icebreakers send them to us.  We would love to see them.  Now, our interview with Shannon A. Thompson.
 Letsbreaktheice

1. Do you kill bugs or set them free?

“Depends on the bug? Lady bugs must be set free. Wasps must be vacuumed with the hose from a distance.”

2. If you weren’t human what would you be?

“Oh! Now that is a question. I think a magical, forest creature of some sort – as long as I was also nocturnal.”

merlot_image3. What is your favorite color?

“A deep red, like Merlot. I actually painted my bedroom in college this color, and I matched it with black and gold furniture with black and white posters from my favorite 50’s movies.”

4.  If you were a fairy tale character who would you be?

“I grew up with the Grimms’ Fairy Tales, so I’m not sure I would want to be one of those characters. They always end up dismembered. But if I could choose from Disney, I think Mulan is my favorite (although the legend of Hua Mulan is very different from the Disney version.) I’m starting to think that I’m over-thinking this.”

5. If you were that fairy tale character fighting a dragon and the dragon gave you a choice between saving your love and saving a nearby village from its wrath which would you choose?

“I would save my love, because I would’ve already saved the village people – making the village empty and only houses would be destroyed. (See? Happy endings.)”

the_questions_ban

1.  Why did you choose to write about Shades?

“Well, for one, I like writing about creatures beyond the norm, and the shades were based off of what I saw in the dreams I based the novel off of. I wasn’t sure what to call them, but I ultimately decided on shades when writing the second novel. I actually explained my decision on my website” here: http://shannonathompson.com/2013/09/16/writing-tips-creating-the-paranormal/ where I discuss the method of combining old tales with new ideas in order to create a refreshing twist on overused creatures.

2. In your book the Shades have a human form.  Were you worried that would be confusing to the reader?

“I think most authors are worried about everything being confusing to the reader, but I trust the reader. Of course, juggling two identities with every character wasn’t easy when writing, so I knew it wouldn’t be easy when reading it, but sometimes that is the point – the challenge yourself and the reader to focus on the separation of identities in order to grasp what the trilogy is stating about identity in general.”

3. What do you hope your readers take away from this series?

“Other than being entertained, I hope readers can relate to the characters and appreciate the challenge of stereotypes and archetypes. For instance, light is normally good, and dark is bad, but I flipped them. I wanted readers to ask, “Why do we continue to use these same symbols in our literature over and over, and do we have to continue using them?” In terms of stereotypes, I wanted to create characters that teens could relate to in order to find comfort in their own identity. For instance, Crystal dresses in a style most would consider “punk,” but she is ambitious and girly in her own way. I wanted readers to see themselves – or their classmates – in that. A punk doesn’t have to be this “negative punk.” A punk can be a hardworking student that goes to prom.”

4. How is writing a series different than writing a stand alone novel?

“I wrote about this on my website, too. I do a lot of writing, editing, and publishing tips. But, anyway, here’s the link: http://shannonathompson.com/2013/09/05/writing-tips-sequel-trilogy-series-etc/ I think both require a lot of attention and planning, but a series is much longer, and they must tie together, which can add complications. I enjoy writing both, but I recommend new writers to begin with a stand-alone novel before moving onto series.”

5. What can you tell us about book two in The Timely DeathSeconds Before Sunrise Trilogy?

“Seconds Before Sunrise releases on March 27, 2014. While the first book was focused on being in the Dark, this novel will revolve around what it is like to be human in a paranormal world. But don’t worry! There’s plenty of action, romance, and twists ready to be revealed and explored. I will give you one hint: the novel takes place from the middle of August to the middle of December.”

6. Who is your favorite author?

“That is an impossible question, but I will try to narrow it down to a few. Billy Collins is my favorite poet, and Cassandra Clare is my current obsession within the YA genre (but I also LOVE Lauren Oliver and Meg Cabot and…okay, I could go on forever.)”

7. What books have influenced you and your work?

“I wouldn’t say that any specific books have influenced my work, but I would say that an abundance of reading all different kinds of novels inspired me to write in a variety of genres. That being said, I always admired Meg Cabot’s young-adult fiction. She isn’t afraid of breaking boundaries with her protagonists, allowing them to be both tough and girly, intellectual and human, as well as many other things.”

8. What has writing taught you about yourself?

“Writing has allowed me to realize what is most important in this world: helping and inspiring others. I always thought my dream was to be a published author, but that happened, and I knew that wasn’t the main goal I was working toward. Ultimately, I dream of being able to open an affordable art school. It may not be accredited, but I think it would be better if it was simply a place where new artists could meet acclaimed artists in their field – like networking – and grow with their art in order to make it into a career at an earlier age.”

9. What has it taught you about life?

“Life is short. I know. I know. How cliche. But there’s a reason it’s cliche – it’s true.
My love for writing was only taken seriously after my mother died, and I knew I had to spend my life spreading the love for achieving dreams, because – quite frankly – I won’t be here forever, but art will be. It may not be my art – but if I can influence another artist to try, I think my life will be worth it. Art is immortal, and it teaches the soul to those of the future.”

ShannonAThompson10. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

“My mantra is “Write with passion; succeed with self-discipline.” It helps me get through the bad and the good days. It’s okay if you have to remind yourself how much you love what you do; you just have to keep doing it. It may take years, even decades, but following your dreams is worth more than wondering what it would be like to try.”
