Stories on the Go: 101 Very Short Stories by 101 Authors

101SOTGBook Description: This anthology aims to be a showcase of recent indie writing.

Hugh Howey launched the idea on Kboards, a forum for Kindle readers, but also the meeting place of an active community of indie writers.

The result is this anthology of 101 very short stories by 101 authors.

To make it more attractive for you, the reader, we set ourselves a limit of a thousand words. You should be able to read each story in under five minutes — on your desktop computer, laptop, or tablet at home or in the office, but also on your smartphone, on the go, while you are commuting or waiting at a coffee shop for your significant other to arrive.

We included as many genres as we could. We hope that maybe, with only five minutes of your time on the line that would otherwise be wasted anyway, you’ll be tempted to venture outside your comfort zone and try out some new genres and new authors.

My Review: When they say these are short stories they mean super short. It turns out that 1,000 words goes quickly. I read four of theses very short stories. My favorite was The Eternal Gateway: Blades by SB Jones. It’s a steampunk story about a thief.  The stories that I read appear to involve characters from a series. I got the feeling that there is a book about Xavier Ross somewhere and I missed it so I went looking. There are three if you’re curious. I think the first one is Sky Mages and the Gateway of Time. They are all on Kindle Unlimited.

After the end of Thursday at the Ritz-Carlton by Jean Louise we learn that the “young woman” in the tale Angelina Carr is the star of many of the author’s books. I kind of wish they would have let us know that these stories involved established characters. It wouldn’t have stopped me from reading. I just like to be prepared.

This book is supposed to expose you to new authors and genres. It does both of those things very well. I will absolutely look for books by these authors in the future. It should be noted that this book also has a great index. You can sort by the table of contents, the author, or by genre. That is a fantastic feature in a book with so many stories.  I had never heard of most of the authors featured. I think I only recognized two names on the author index. So if you’re looking for new authors to try then this is the book for you.
