Kimberly Steele had barely recovered from her wedding reception the day before, and now, she’s just discovered the body of her husband’s former girlfriend, Clare Barnett, someone whom she had argued with hours ago at a photo shoot for the Pretty and Hip perfume line. It’s no wonder she was the prime suspect, at least in the eyes of Deputy Danworth.
Jeremy Preston wasn’t about to allow his new wife, Kimberly, to be railroaded, although he was upset that Kimberly had pushed Clare into Lake Huron right before Clare’s death, or so Clare said. He hired Agnes Barton, a senior-aged sleuth, from East Tawas, who had a high success rate of crime solving, never expecting that his pregnant wife would begin to traipse around with Agnes and her partner, Eleanor Mason, as they dug into the background of Clare that led all the way to Hollywood.
Agnes and Eleanor were rooming at Mrs. Barry’s house during the case, the same beer-toting senior and mother of Sheriff Clay Barry who not long ago ran for sheriff in East Tawas, much to the chagrin of Agnes and Eleanor. But this time around Mrs. Barry had changed her tune and gave them the use of her car.
Pretty, Hip & Dead is a spin off of the Author’s Senior Sleuth series, which let me say now I have not read. This is the first book I have picked up by Madison Johns. It was a cute light read, which is what I was looking for.
Kimberly Steele is well for lack of a better term your stereo typical blonde. She is a little ditsy but with a big heart. Who finds herself in a very per-curious situation. Newly married her husbands ex girlfriend, who she is in an ad campaign with, and just pushed off the pier at their latest photo shoot has turned up dead, and Kimberly is the one to find her. In comes Agnes and Eleanor to clear her name. Kimberly not wanting to be left in the dark insists on tagging along everywhere they go. Oh did I mention she is also six months pregnant, wears nothing but pink and insists on wearing high heels all the time.
Agnes and Eleanor, our senior sleuths, are an interesting pair of woman. They are intelligent and not afraid to go where they are needed to get the job done. They are one of the best aspects of the book.
This is your typical cozy mystery with all the right players. If your looking for something you don’t have to take to seriously then Pretty, Hip & Dead is the way to go.
