On the evening of Sofia Claremont’s seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake. A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.
She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.
An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.
Sofia’s life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.
Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.
Will she succeed? …or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?
This was a mixed bag for me. While I liked the story itself it had “shades” of twilight. Let me break it down. Girl meets vampire, girl and vampire fall in love. Vampire doesn’t want to hurt her and is afraid he might drink her blood. Sound familiar. The POV changes every chapter between the two. At first it was a little distracting, but then I got the flow and it was okay.
Sophia has absolutely no fear of Derek right from the beginning. REALLY! He’s a vampire. A little fear of him would have been in order. But she just stands up to him and he falls instantly in love. Sophia was left with her father’s best friend when she was young. Her mother is gone and her father was a rich man who chose as far as she knows not to take care of her. He sends a check every month, but that’s it. She has had a crush on her best friend Ben for as long as she can remember and kind of just follows him around like his little puppy dog. When Sophia is kidnapped by the Shade it is her 17th birthday and they are on vacation in Cancun where Ben has just totally forgotten her birthday. Great best friend.
As for Derek. He’s the prince of the shade who is reluctant to be a vampire and chose to be put to sleep for the last 400 years. He has done some pretty cruel things in his past which Sophia later on just seems to except without any explanation.
There are 7 books in the series about Sophia and Derek. While I didn’t mind the first one I will admit I started the second and have not been able to get through it. This is one of those books that most people either love or they hate. So if you liked twilight and you like vampires I would recommend picking it up and giving it a try.
This is a book about vampires that should be enough said.
