Coralina by Anita Valle

CoralinaCoralina (The Nine Princesses Novella)

By Anita Valle

Coralina Corissa, known as “Coco” to her eight sisters, is the prettiest princess of a hundred kingdoms. And she knows it. Her beauty has always given her anything she wanted… and any MAN she wanted.

Runa Realm is facing a new threat. Strange bandits, disguised as nobles, are attacking beautiful women to steal their hair. Coralina isn’t concerned. Until Prince Luxley, her favorite (but not only) lover, gets clobbered by a peasant called Gord, who mistakenly assumed the prince was a bandit.

Outraged, Coralina plans to punish the peasant by deliberately breaking his heart. But Gord is nearly blind. For the first time ever, Coralina must rely on more than her looks to ensnare a man. But the harder she flirts, the more Gord seems to hate her. And the more her own heart (and hair) becomes endangered.

The Nine Princesses Novellas is a series that chronicles the adventures of an unconventional family of princesses, the struggles they face in a kingdom often hostile to their humble origins, and the day-to-day dramas of nine young women whose personalities often clash like swords. Fans of Gale Carson Levine and Shannon Hale would enjoy this young-adult series. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

My Review:

As soon as I finished the first one I picked up this one.  I was interested in seeing how some of the open plot points were worked in.  While all our questions still are not answered I am more confident that eventually they will be.

Again this is another cute story.  I will admit Coralina is probably going to be my least favorite princess.  I always had a diversion to girls who know they are pretty and flaunt it to get what they want. But at the same time I feel like what Gord did to her was a little harsh.  I won’t get into details because I don’t want to ruin it for anyone else.

Coraline is very used to getting what she wants and playing any gentleman to get it.  So when Gord comes along, a man that is almost completely blind, she doesn’t know what to do.  Only problem is her reputation has preceded her, so her flirting is getting her nowhere. She devises a scheme after he accidently sends her into the lake to try and get back at him.  But can she really pull it off or will she finally learn what it feels like to be used.

Mixed into the flirting is a band of bandits that are cutting off women’s hair to sell to the highest bidder for the newest fashion crazy.  I have to admit I didn’t see where that was going to lead.

I felt a little cheated at the end am wondering how and if this will play out in later books.temp (4)

Locked by Eva Morgan

Locked by Eva Morgan

I really liked this book and I want to talk about it so let’s get the book description out of the way so that you know what I’m talking about.

Book Summary:

When eighteen-year-old Irene Adler meets her new neighbor, the gorgeous, brilliant, and arrogant Sherlock Holmes, she never expects him to be the one to make her feel like life is worth living again. Ever since her sister’s death, she’s been addicted to risk-taking as a way to deal with her depression, and Sherlock quickly becomes the biggest risk she’s ever taken.

Locked is the story of a broken girl and the genius who gives her life back to her. It’s the story of a witty asshole who’s never known love, and the girl who shows him what love means. It’s the story of an unexpected connection, two people who save each other, and the importance of seeing the goodness underneath.

**Based on the Sherlock Holmes series by Arthur Conan Doyle.

My Review:

When they say it’s based on Doyle’s series they mean it and it helps if you’ve read the original stories.  I don’t think it’s a must but I can’t see how the end would be the same if you didn’t know what was coming.  Poor Irene and Sherlock.  I was about to suggest you at least watch the BBC series Sherlock or the CBS series Elementary but even they don’t do the story of Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler justice.  In my opinion this book is as close to reinventing their complicated relationship, in a manner worthy of the original material, that I’ve come across.  You should just go and read the Sherlock Holmes stories.  They are amazing.  If you don’t want to invest the time then at the very least you should go to LibriVox and listen to the stories.

The book starts out with Irene using her secret life as a problem solver to keep her depression at bay.  She’s suffered a recent tragedy and isn’t handling it well.  Then she meets Sherlock Holmes.  What girls world wouldn’t be turned upside down by Sherlock Holmes moving into the neighborhood.  He’s intrigued by Irene.  She offers him a distraction from his boredom.  He offers her the excitement that staves off her depression.  Two damaged souls working to help one another.  That is how a romance works right?  I think this story is much more than a romance though.  It’s what happens when the world’s biggest know it all discovers he really doesn’t know it all.

The only word of warning I can offer is that there are a couple of missing words and a few words that are misplaced.  It wasn’t to distracting.  I think you’ll be to caught up in the story to really care.

I really enjoyed this book.  I think it’s for Sherlockians and novices alike.  It is also just a great YA book.  How can you say no to a book that includes notes written by the man himself.  If you’ve ever wondered what a modern eighteen year old Sherlock Holmes would be like you’re in luck.  Eva Morgan has answered the call.

Meet Lexi Fairheart and follow her quest to discover what is hidden behind the forbidden door at her grandpa’s house.

Viola’s Review:

Lexi should have listened to her Grandpa.  She shouldn’t have opened the door.  Lexi could have been hurt.  I was scared when she was in the dark.  The spider could have gotten her!temp (7)

Grandpa was nice to her.  He made her boo boo better.

Jessica’s Review:

This was a cute story with a couple of lesson. The lessons are about listening, making the right choices and forgiveness. When Lexi makes the wrong choice her Grandfather finds her and explains why it was the wrong decision along with forgiving her. Viola really likes this book and it has become one she likes to read on most nights.

A Presidential Suggestion

51NJCA2EEWLI know that President’s Day was Monday and everyone except the automotive industry has moved on but I have a suggestion.  President’s Day offers us a unique opportunity to talk about biographies.  What better time than a day set aside to honor our countries leaders.  Not all biographies of presidents are boring lectures.  There are plenty that are informative and are still a narative.  My favorite biography of a president is by David McCullough.  It’s called “Mornings On Horseback, The Story of an Extraordinary Family, a Vanished Way of Life and the Unique Child Who Became Theodore Roosevelt”.

It’s an extraordinary biography by the king of extraordinary biographies.  If David McCullough‘s name sounds familiar it should.  It was his biography of John Adams that HBO turned into a mini series that appeared to be nominated for every award under the sun and won most of them.  Being awarded two Pulitzer’s doesn’t hurt either.

David McCullough is a rare historian.  He makes you feel like you’re there as he takes you through a subjects life.  Who else would think to tell us about a bedroom in the Roosevelt household that had its back wall removed to crate an open air playroom for the Roosevelt children?  He shares more than the facts of a persons life.  He includes the little things that show his subjects character.

Mornings On Horseback is full of such details.  It covers the whole of his life and much of his siblings lives.  How can you tell a story without a supporting cast?  You can’t. As he builds the story of Theodore Roosevelt he also builds the stories of the lives Theodore  Roosevelt touched. There are even passages at end of the book on the other three Roosevelt children at the end of their lives.  He was close to his family and a biography without them would be lacking.

The biography also includes many photographs from the Roosevelt collection at Harvard.  The collection of photographs is worth looking at all on its own.  The scanned photos on the Harvard site are of better quality than those in the book.  The book won a National Book Award in 1982 so that lets you know that technology has progressed.  There is a great picture of the three Roosevelt children before Theodore went off to Harvard.  It’s my favorite.  It shows the Roosevelt children’s personalities.

It’s been years since I’ve read this book but writing his post has made me want to read it again.  Not every historical figure is lucky enough to have someone like David McCullough immortalize them.  That’s a pity.  I would read more biographies if they all had his flair.  I like his balance of humanity and history.
